About Viagra

Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, Revatio and under various other trade names, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It was originally developed by British scientists and then brought to market by the US-based pharmaceutical company Pfizer. It acts by inhibiting cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5, an enzyme that delays degradation of cGMP, which regulates blood flow in the penis. Since becoming available in 1998, sildenafil has been the prime treatment for erectile dysfunction; its primary competitors on the market are tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).

The primary indication of sildenafil is treatment of erectile dysfunction (inability to sustain a satisfactory erection to complete intercourse). Its use is now standard treatment for erectile dysfunction in all settings, including diabetes. People on antidepressants may experience sexual dysfunction, either as a result of their illness or as a result of their treatment. A 2003 study showed that sildenafil improved sexual function in men in this situation. Following up to earlier reports from 1999, the same researchers found that sildenafil was able to improve sexual function in female patients on antidepressants as well.

What’s Viagra

Better known as the “little blue pill”, this was the first drug on to the market to treat erectile dysfunction. As a pill, it’s the easiest and most convenient form of treatment.

Is this the only name?

No, it’s also sold under the generic name of Sildenafil Citrate. There’s a different brand for the use of a similar version to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, i.e. high blood pressure because the flow of blood is limited through the chest.

How does Viagra work?

The technical explanation is that it’s a PDE5 inhibitor. A number of different chemical messengers are needed to control the erection process. If all is working well, the arteries leading into your penis dilate. More blood flows into the penis and this inflates into the erection. PDE5 is part of the control over the dilation and contraction of arteries. If it comes at the wrong time, your arteries will not dilate or contract at the wrong moment. Viagra prevents PDE5 from working too soon and this encourages your arteries to dilate.

How long does it take for Viagra to work?

It depends on how recently you have eaten and what you ate. If you are taking Viagra on a reasonably empty stomach, it takes effect in about 30 minutes. But, the more food you eat and the higher the fat content, the longer it will take for Viagra to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This can mean it taking more than an hour before you will feel the effect. There have been clinical trials to establish this guideline. Taking the highest allowable dosage of 100mg, healthy men were able to achieve an erection in about 15 minutes but, unless there’s a very good reason to take this dose, the benefit of speed comes with the higher risk of side effects.

How long does the effect last?

From the first sign of sexual response to stimulation, the average time is four hours. Some men have reported responsiveness for up to six hours but this is a small percentage.

Does Viagra work the first time?

If you do not have more serious physical or mental problems, Viagra will usually work the first time. If it does not, try again three or four times. If the failure continues, this may justify trying a higher dosage. But it may be evidence of a more serious underlying problem. If depression interferes with your interest in sex, Viagra will not work. Similarly, if diabetes has caused damage to your nerve endings, no drug will be able to restore erections.

Can you drink alcohol?

There’s a problem when you put two drugs together when they have the same effect. It’s called potentiation, i.e. the result is more than twice as strong. For these purposes, alcohol is a drug and, when you drink more than a small amount with Viagra, it can cause your blood pressure to drop suddenly. You are safe with ordinary “social” drinking. But too much will make you feel unpleasantly faint and will certainly prevent any sexual activity until your blood pressure recovers.

Can you take Viagra with other medications?

This is a complicated question and, if in doubt, you should take professional advice before taking any two drugs together. For these purposes, “drugs” includes over-the-counter medicines, health, diet and other natural products including herbal remedies and vitamins. There can be unpredictable results when different chemicals are combined in your bloodstream. The main class of drugs to avoid are designed to control or reduce your blood pressure. The most dangerous contain nitrates and are usually prescribed to treat angina and other aspects of heart disease. Note that some street drugs contain nitrates and can cause serious problems.

What are Viagra’s side effects?

The good news is that very few men report any side effects. The occasional headache or upset stomach is a small price to pay for the restoration of sexual performance. If you have a violent allergic reaction the first or second time you take Viagra, do not continue to use it. There are alternatives. In a small number of cases, men report slight changes to their vision, seeing the world with a slightly bluish tinge. So long as your vision is not more dramatically affected, this will pass. It’s an emergency if you feel faint, your heart rate climbs and you have chest pain. Also get treatment if your erection will not deflate and grows painful.

Viagra

One of the ways in which men deceive themselves is by believing their partners did not notice an erectile dysfunction or, if they did, that the failure did not matter. In reality, partners always notice and the majority are affected. If you are about to penetrate your partner and suddenly find the erection has disappeared, this is hard to hide. More importantly, almost every partner is going to be disappointed, particularly if it becomes a regular failure.

The worst thing you can do is keep quiet. Your partner will be left to worry about the reasons for the failure. Do you no longer find your partner attractive? Have you found someone else? Will you be leaving soon? So, no matter how embarrassing the failure, you should immediately apologise. Your partner is looking for reassurance that the love is still strong, that you will not be leaving tomorrow for someone younger and more attractive. If the failure repeats and looks as if sex might become a regular non-event, the next step is to eliminate the natural worry you have a serious underlying disease or disorder. The current directions given to all doctors is that men who come into for a consultation on erectile dysfunction should be treated as heart patients until that possibility is excluded. Excluding radical surgery and accidental injury, the other serious causes are diabetes which can cause permanent nerve damage unless treated early, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and the side effects of some drugs. Depression can result in a loss of libido.

You and your partner will both have peace of mind if the serious diseases and disorders are excluded. That leaves viagra as the first-line response so long as your medical history does not rule it out. Then it’s just a matter of restarting sexual activity. Assuming your partner has been supportive throughout, this last step of resuming sex should not be a problem. Indeed, both of you will be relieved you can get back to how it used to be.

What strength does viagra come in? There are not really different types of Viagra that offer different strengths. It is all one formula that works in the same way and all Viagra pills are made up of the same exact stuff. The strength of the pill has to do with dosage. You can buy Viagra as bottle of pills that have different dosages. There are 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg pills available, usually. It is important, very important, not not determine what dosage you need on your own. Do not take the largest dosage just because, it might not be the best one for you and it might cause severe side effects if it is not right for you. It is very important to talk to a doctor before you begin taking the pills, because there are many different factors involved that will determine what dosage is right for you and what Viagra strength you need. It could depend on your age, it could depend on any other medical problems you may have, or it could be a combination of various factors. That is why it is of the utmost importance to consult a doctor and to refrain from doing this yourself. This is definitely one of those situations in which you are not qualified to make the decision on your own. The typical dosage is 50mg. When you are taking the pill, the doctor will usually tell you to take it about one hour before you plan on having sex, so that it has time to begin working. Usually the doctor will start most people on this strength and then see how that person reacts. After talking to the patient and asking how it worked and whether there were any side effects, the doctor can then recommend if the dosage should be smaller or larger, or whether it should remain at 50mg. That is the usual procedure. However, the maximum strength Viagra dosage is absolutely 100mg and it cannot go any higher than that, because it would not be safe otherwise. So you might be asking in what instances a doctor might recommend that you take more than 50mg. This will happen if the Viagra is not giving you the desired results. Also, it is important to remember that the Viagra works differently on different people. Therefore, even though the general rule is to take the pill an hour before sex, there are some people who start feeling effects in half an hour, while there are others who might have to wait or four hours before it begins working. It is also important to remember that the dosage is very important and that rules need to be followed very closely. This is not a recreational drug and it is very strong and powerful. Therefore it is recommended that Viagra should not be used more than one time a day. There really is not much of a difference if you take the Viagra with food or not, but for example, if it works very quickly on you, then you might want to eat something before you take it. If it takes a long time to have an effect on you, then you might want to take the Viagra on an empty stomach. It must be stressed time and time again that it is of absolute importance to make sure that you are following your doctors exact instruction on how to take the pill. Do not increase or decrease the dosage on a hunch or just because you think that it is not working the way it should. You doctor needs to be an integral part of the process at all times.
